About the Hazaeki

This is a little bit about the Hazaeki (in addition to the blurb under the seven.)

What are the Hazaeki? - they are shapeshifters. They have no sexes - they are neither male nor female but in the presence of sentient monoform races they will usually chose a gender to appear as to not offend their sensibilities.

Hazaeki are parasitic and require a living host to survive and reproduce (under most circumstances). They are able to live autonomously for 3 months at a time but on the fourth month they must enter a resting phase inside of a suitable host. They can also partly regenerate by absorbing nutrition from a host, however this is not as effective and must be performed more frequently. Going too long without regenerating will Hazaeki to die but generally hazaeki are immortal. Hosts that are at all electrical or sufficiently strange in biology are generally unsuited to Hazaeki. Of the seven Pharlans and most likely Tartarians could not serve as Hazaeki hosts. Hazaeki may be formed in one of four ways.

  1. Most typically Hazaeki choose a mate of a monoform species (sentient or non) and bear hazaeki children with them. Usually the new hazaeki will have an "imprinted form" - (the form that they feel most comfortable in) that is similar to the monoform parent.
  2. Alternatively Hazaki can fuse with a sentient species to form a single being - this is usually done to save the life of the monoform - i. e. surviving a grave injury. In this case the imprinted form will be identical to that of the monoform.
  3. Hazaeki can also bud and "take over" the body of a monform without losing themselves as in fusion. This is often done for the monoform mate once their lifespan nears it's end. This takes several years of preparation on the part of the Hazaeki and so cannot be performed in times of great need.
  4. Every 2000 years or so Hazaeki have a great gathering in which all hazaeki individuals must gather together in one large pooling group. If a Hazaeki cannot find a suitable group of his own kind at this time he will die. Usually these large pools produce a large number of young called Chiabi. Chiabi are somewhat special as they are the only hazaeki formed by ONLY hazaeki. Often some of the Chiabi will be adopted by Hazaeki couples. It is generally almost impossible to tell whose children they actually are . . .
Most Hazaeki are nonviolent and peacful often content to use nonsentient species as hosts. They feel a strong bond with nature and the creatures they live alongside and inside. Hazaeki tend to be slow to innovate but are highly intelligent. They often like to hold long discussions on various philosophical topics.
Hazaeki are often distrusted by intelligent monoform species because of their changeable nature. However Hazaeki are usually personable and easy to get along with.
